The PADI self reliant diver course

Can I go diving by my self? Who is this course for? Well the answer is yes, but it is not for everyone. First up, have a look at a blog I wrote about the PADI solo dive course and an article written by the Dutch Mermaid for PADI themselves.

The PADI self reliant diver course or solo diver course at it is sometimes known is a great diver training program for underwater photographers and underwater videographers alike. I also recommend this program to any PADI Divemaster to PADI Instructor as it will complement your diver training.

There are some pre-requisites you need before you can enrol into the PADI self reliant diver course:

  • Minimum of 100 logged dives

  • PADI advanced certification or equivalent.

The theory part of the self reliant diver course is a combination of some self study and theory presentation by your PADI instructor.

We will be covering topics such as your SAC rate (surface air consumption), self rescue, extra dive equipment, dive planning and management of diver emergencies.

We will also look at the importance and differences of buddy teams and the difference between being a self reliant diver and a solo diver.

Practical

The PADI self reliant diver course consists of three training dives which we complete in one day.

Depending on your schedule and location these dives can be done from Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, Cairns or Port Douglas.

The three training dives will get you comfortable with the extra equipment, such as the redundant air supply, switching air supply underwater and launching a SMB.

We will work on a buoyancy workshops and how to calculate your air supply considering depth, time passed and gas used.

You must be comfortable with no mask swims as a two minute no mask swim is part of the course.
